Integrity is such an important part of running your own business. You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and how you want to present yourself to the world. Understanding this will help you make decisions, not just faster but also more aligned with who you are. A lot of this comes down to spirituality, I will tell you that much.
Not everyone is going to be singing Kumbaya about the fire anytime soon... I'm not going to either. But knowing that I can top into my energy and my "higher self" is something that I will definitely take with me for the rest of my life. It is so important for me that I know what my ultimate outcome is so that I can actually serve people to my highest ability.
Acting From Integrity
Every coach I know myself included, we have a pre-call ritual. It can be anything from a meditation, to jumping up and down, to taking a cold shower, or shouting our affirmations at the top of our lungs. Which ever way we choose to get ourselves into "state“ is how we know that we are serving on our highest order.
When you were acting from a place of integrity, everything seems to flow a lot easier. Engagement goes up, you feel like you are able to plan your content better, and you just are a better version of even yourself right now.
So how do we achieve this integrity? We take time to figure out what we want who we want to be and also how we are putting ourselves out there.
I’m sure everyone has had this before, where after maybe a heated exchange, or a Facebook argument, we went “Ah…maybe we didn’t really need to engage in that. That was not my best self and that interaction didn’t need to happen.”
What happens when you’re not in integrity
This might seem kind of obvious, but when you’re not acting out of integrity, things just… don’t go as well. So, if you were business is not going as well as you wanted to be, or as you think it can be, then you really need to look at the question what is not aligning?
And it can be very basic things. It doesn’t have to be like the big obvious things that you are struggling with. It could be just your daily routine, it could just be the way you talk to yourself, or it actually could be your product.
This is where I encourage you to use some bravery and experiment. It's totally OK to try things out and backtrack. Your Instagram is always deletable. And that's totally fine. I know that I have had to reinvent myself a few times over the years, and each time I got a little bit stronger and what I was trying to say, I got a little bit more self-assured because I was creating so much experience from all of that I was doing.
Here are my 3 steps to achieving integrity.
I do want to preface this with: this is not permanent. You do not have to feel like this is set in stone, you are able to change this at any time whenever you want.
1. Have a clear vision & mission
My vision and mission have changed a bit in their wording and their physical goals a few times over the last few years, but my sentiments have held fast: I want to make the world a better place. I want to help people- how I help them might have changed but the basic premise is still there.
The reason I say this is because I’ve been there. I’ve been aimlessly working hoping to book contracts and deals and had nothing come up… because I wasn’t intentional about anything I was doing. I was just there, hustling at nothing and going nowhere.
Having a clear mission and vision, no matter how long it takes you to work through (and how many iterations you go through, particularly of your mission), keeping steady is going to win for you.
2. Be purposeful about who you want to be
How do you want to show up today? This is a question that I ask myself daily. Who do I want to be? Is it going to be the version of me that checks ten million things off the to do list, or am I going to take it easy? Is it an early-morning yoga day or do I get a lie in?
Tapping into your intuition is so key here. I know this can sound a bit ‘woo’, but intuition is so freaking powerful. I had an argument with my parents recently. I needed a bit of space (usually we call 2-3 times a week). But I was out for my lunchtime walk the other day and Intuition kept saying, “Call Mom”. I tried to ignore it, I put on a podcast. But my heart started beating faster, “Call Mom!!!” so I called her. She didn’t pick up so I sighed with relief and went back to my podcast. But five minutes later she called back and we ended up having an incredibly powerful conversation. If I hadn’t listened to my intuition that would’ve never happened.
You’re probably asking, “wait can I change who I want to be?” Obviously we can’t all be Rhianna, but we can change what we are purposeful about. For some time, I’ve been the go-getter Wonderwoman Arna, and other times I’m soft-and-gentle Wonderwoman Arna… and now, at the time of writing, I want to be joyful Wonderwoman Arna. So in my daily actions, I am always asking myself— how can I be joyful?
3. Take time to reflect
This is so cliché I can literally FEEL you rolling your eyes at me. Yes, it is cliché. But you know what? It’s bloody true. That’s why it’s so cliché. We all want to think that we are wonderful humans that are spiritual AF and are aligned with who we are and what we want to do.
But that’s not always true. By truly working on our purpose, spending time with ourselves can we achieve something close to reflection. Be brave. Leave the phone upstairs when you’re coming down to make a cup of tea or even dinner.
Leave your phone in another room when you’re going to sleep. Take the first hour of the day for yourself. This is the perfect time for you to really create a routine that makes sense for you. Create something that is just for you to be able to center yourself, ground yourself or whatever the hell it is you choose to do, but make sure it is only just for you. Yes biz mama- I am talking to you.
Am I the perfect example of taking time to reflect? Yes, sometimes. I also have days where I need to be on my phone because of a family or friend that needs me. Sometimes I am on Tik Tok way too much. And that's OK, because there is tomorrow too. I make sure that I do what it makes sense for me at the time, and I do my best every single day. And you know what? That’s enough.
When it comes to my own integrity I find it really important to just stay my course. I remember that I was comparing myself to others, and not really appreciating what I was doing for myself. Instead of really taking care of me, I was so busy thinking what other people should do, that I completely lost track of who I was.
At the end of the day, I am no one to judge anyone else for what they are doing. We cannot truly appreciate what other people are going through. Therefore it is so important for us to be able to just stick to our own guns.
Finally, the question you want to ask yourself is: what do I want to share with the world? Is it that you want to share a gift, do you want to share a system, or do you want to share the love and joy and passion that you have for whatever it is that you do? Always come back to this question when things get confusing. When you are deciding whether or not to work with a client, you can ask yourself: is this really going to achieve my goal of spreading more (insert item) in the world? If the answer is not a resounding yes, you know what to do.
And remember, this intuition, this integrity, it's going to take time. You're not going to always get it right on the first go. And heck, sometimes I still get it wrong. And that's because I'm human. As long as I stay true to myself, I know that I will be okay. In fact, I’m going to be better than okay. I’m going to shine in all aspects of my life.
