Dare to dream

When I was working as a travel agent, my colleagues affectionately nicknamed me "the dream crusher"

I know. So rude.

The reason they said that was because people would come to me with their grand plans and tiny budgets and I would be super blunt and say: that's not doable. What my colleagues would fail to tell you though, is that I worked patiently with the customers to readjust their dream, invent new ones, so that when they did walk out of the store, credit cards that much lighter, they were still happy as a clam.

It was comforting knowing I could still get an amazing outcome despite setbacks. That's what kept me working as a travel agent for so long. But then... things got uncomfortable. I started getting antsy. I was adjusting my life, I set my expectations lower, and I was unhappy because I had a tiny budget and my dreams were shrinking with each passing month. As time wore on, I became more and more unhappy to the point where I was depressed.

It's taken me five years to admit that: I was super, super depressed. I was in a bad place. I was making terrible decisions, I was trying to grasp on to what I thought would give me life, and I lived on the edge. I hurt people around me, and I especially hurt myself.

The climb back out of that hole has taken a lot of effort- if you follow me, you know just how much effort, so I won't go into that now.

What I want to focus on today is the dream component: DREAM BIG, my wonderpreneur.

Dream big.

Dream big because you deserve to. Dream big because it's FUN! Don't hold on too tightly to the outcome- that's not what this is about. The journey itself will be the reward, and the reaching of the end goal? A total bonus.

Dream big because if you're not reaching high enough you'll never get very far.

Dream big because your life depends on it.

Dream big because your heart wants to soar.

And for the naysayers? I wouldn't bother telling them your plans. They'll only scoff like my exes did, or roll their eyes like my ex colleagues did. Talk to the ones that will dream with you. Talk to the friends that ask you questions and details about your dreams and encourage you. Talk to the friends that give you space to expand your thoughts, your powers, and learn with you.

Hell, talk to yourself! Spend 2-5 minutes a day talking to yourself so that you can start to really embody those dreams of yours.

Ok I've never wanted a yacht but you catch my drift...

One small exercise I've done is to write down a goal, and then 10x that goal, and then 10x THAT goal. (Obviously don't do this with weight loss lol). Try it... what do you come up with? What does dreaming big look like?

Below are a couple of examples:

DREAM 1:

Run 1 marathon in the next 12 months

x10

Run 1 marathon, 1 half marathon, and 2x 10ks in the next 12 months

x10

Run 2 marathons, 1 half marathon, and 2x 10ks in the next 2 12 months

Now take a moment to picture what it would feel like to accomplish all this. How would your life be different? Would your relationships change? What about health? Or career?

DREAM 2:

Make $100,000 in 2020

x10

Make $1,000,000 in 2020

x10

Make $10,000,000 in 2020

Now take a moment to picture what it would feel like to accomplish all this. How would your life be different? Would your relationships change? What about health? Or career?

Dream 3:

Lose 10kgs in the next 6 months

x10

Lose 10kgs, stop drinking alcohol, vegetarian diet

x10

Lose 10kgs, stop drinking alcohol, vegan diet, no more fried food

Now take a moment to picture what it would feel like to accomplish all this. How would your life be different? Would your relationships change? What about health? Or career?

It's not easy dreaming big, is it? It's actually quite difficult. But that's OK. That's part of the process. Learn to push yourself, even when it's about fun, nice things. I'm currently doing this more daily and it's starting to pay off... see you at the top!
